Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said that as of June 30, 2000 notes worth Rs 2.72 lakh crore have been returned. Now only Rs 84,000 crore 2000 notes are in circulation, the Reserve Bank said. Last May 19, it was announced about the withdrawal of 2,000 notes. 2,000 notes can be returned by September 30.
According to the Reserve Bank data, 87 percent of the 2,000 notes have been deposited in bank accounts and 13 percent have been exchanged.
On the other hand, the Delhi High Court on Monday dismissed a public interest case challenging the Reserve Bank of India’s decision to demonetise the 2000 notes. A bench consisting of Chief Justice Justice Satish Chandra Sharma and Justice Subramaniam Prasad dismissed the petition.
Earlier, the verdict on this petition was reserved on May 30. Petitioner Rajnish Vaskar Gupta argued that the RBI does not have the power to withdraw the Rs 20 note from circulation and only the central government can take a decision in this regard. Even before this, the High Court has dismissed such a case.
