Ruchira Kamboj took charge as India’s first woman ambassador to the United Nations

The all-round female topper of the 1987 Civil Service batch, was also the topper in the 'Foreign Service Batch' of that year.

United Nations: Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj on Tuesday submitted her papers to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to take over as India’s permanent representative to the United Nations. Ruchira is the first woman from India to serve as a representative at the UN headquarters in New York.

58-year-old Ruchira is an Indian Foreign Service Officer of 1987 batch. Earlier she was working as Ambassador of India to Bhutan. Additionally, from 2002 to 2005, she served as the Counselor of the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations.

Ruchira tweeted: Today I submitted my papers as UN Permanent Representative/Ambassador to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. She has the honor of being the first Indian woman to hold this position. Telling the girls, we all can fulfill such a responsibility.

It is worth noting that Kamboj, the all-round female topper of the 1987 Civil Service batch, was also the topper in the ‘Foreign Service Batch’ of that year. She first started his diplomatic career in Paris. From 1989 to 1991, she was appointed as the Third Secretary of the Indian Embassy in France.
