The Madras High Court banned mobile phones in temples across Tamil Nadu

Madurai: The Madurai bench of the Madras High Court on Friday ordered the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment (HR&CE) to ban the use of mobile phones in temples in Tamil Nadu state to maintain integrity and religious sanctity.

As the devotees take photos and videos in violation, effective action has been taken to ban the use of mobile phones inside the Tiruchendur Sri Subramania Swami temple.

The petitioner said, this is against the ‘Agam’ rules and undermines the security of the temple. Apart from this, there is a possibility of taking pictures of female devotees and abusing them according to the law. In order to maintain integrity and religious sanctity, the Meenakshi Sundareshwar temple in Madurai Tamil Nadu has also banned mobile phones and arranged a separate locker room outside the temple premises to keep them.

Judge R Mahadevan and J Sathya Narayana said, for the safety of the devotees and to maintain the sanctity of the temple, the authorities should take steps to ban the use of cellphones inside the temple.
