New Delhi: Bilkis Bano herself has today filed a writ petition in the Supreme Court challenging the order of premature release of 11 convicts who raped her and killed her family members during the 2002 Gujarat riots.

Hearing the appeal of one of the 11 convicts, the Supreme Court had earlier said that the Gujarat government can release the convicts under the ‘1992 Remission Policy’.

Based on the above verdict, the Gujarat government released 11 convicts on August 15 this year, saying that they were released due to good behavior. They have already served more than 15 years in prison.

Today, Bilkis Bano’s lawyer, narrating the incident in front of Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, he said the said petition will be heard.

In this petition, Bilkis Bano said, “Maharashtra, not Gujarat, should take the decision on the release of the convicts.”

It is worth noting that 21-year-old Bilkis Bano was serving a 5-month sentence when the above-mentioned misdeeds were revealed. During the riots, they also killed nine members of her family, including her three-year-old daughter.
