Delhi: BSNL will get 5G spectrum worth Rs 62,000 crore from the Department of Telecom (DoT). And this will be in addition to the Rs 1.64 lakh crore relief package announced by the government earlier this year.
Apart from this, the government is planning to allot airwaves in 700 MHz and 3.3 GHz to BSNL. BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) will be the second telecom operator in India to offer 5G services through the 700 MHz band. Earlier, the 700 MHz band was only with Jio.
According to reports of media , BSNL will get around Rs 40,000 crore for 10 MHz in the 700 MHz band and around Rs 22,000 crore for 70 MHz in the 3.60-3.67 GHz band. With this spectrum allocation, BSNL will be able to provide better 5G services. Notably, the sub-GHz band will especially help telcos deliver 5G services in rural areas.
BSNL will soon launch 4G services in India with the help of a consortium led by Tata Consultancy Services, which includes Tejas Networks and Center for Development of Telematics.
According to the report, a government official said in this regard that the committee of the Department of Telecom has approved the proposal to allocate 10 MHz in the 700 MHz band and 70 MHz in the 3.60-3.67 GHz band. Apart from this, it is also being discussed that it will be taken forward.
Significantly, the government will get enough spectrum in the 700 MHz band to give to BSNL, as Bharat Airtel has said it will not get 700 MHz spectrum even in future auctions. However, a report published by IIFL Securities said that the low-frequency band is not absolutely necessary for 5G SA, but it will provide a competitive edge.
Expected to Launch in 2023
Experts believe that the 10 MHz spectrum in the 700 MHz band is suitable for Airtel as it will be important to provide 5G in rural areas. Reliance Jio has spent Rs 39,270 crore to acquire 10 MHz spectrum in the 700 MHz band across the country. BSNL’s 5G is expected to launched in August 2023.
