Mallikarjun Kharge writes to PM Modi demanding ‘up-to-date’ caste census

New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge today shared the letter he wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on social media demanding a caste census.

In the said letter written on April 16, Kharge also stated that the census which is done every ten years should be done in 2021, but it has not been done. Furthermore, social justice and empowerment programs cannot be completed in the absence of a reliable ‘database’ of the most recent ethnic census. Especially, the ‘Other Backward Classes’ are suffering.

In the letter, he added, “I am writing to you once again to present the latest caste-based census records as demanded by the INC.” Like other opposition leaders, me and my colleagues have raised this demand in both houses of Parliament many times before.

In 2011-12, the ‘UPA’ government for the first time conducted a ‘Socio-Economic and Caste Census‘ (SECC) covering 25 crore families. After your government came to power in May 2014, the said caste data was not disclosed for various reasons despite the demands of Congress and other MPs.

Therefore, he requested the Prime Minister that caste census should be done immediately.
