Action against child marriage will continue till 2026: Himanta Biswa Sarma
Assam: Government action against child marriage continues in Assam. People are scared after the government’s action. Even a political dispute has started over this. Some leaders have claimed that this is being done with one community in mind.
In this situation, Assam Police arrested 2258 people on Saturday. Even among them are the priests who performed the wedding ceremony. Police said that the number of accused is 8 thousand. The state cabinet took a decision on 23rd to arrest the criminals. Along with this, awareness campaign was also decided to start.
People arrested in the case of “Child Marriage”
Within 15 days of the Cabinet’s decision, the police registered 4074 cases. Even at two o’clock in the night, the police are knocking on the doors of people’s houses and arresting the accused. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that the arrest will continue till the assembly elections in 2026. Maternal and child mortality rates are high in Assam. The main reason for this is said to be child marriage. According to the National Family Health Survey report, 31 percent of the number of registered marriages take place before the appropriate age of marriage.
