Arun Goyal assumed charge at the Election Commission office today

New Delhi: Newly appointed Election Commissioner Arun Goyal assumed charge at the Election Commission office today.

The Law and Justice Minister on Saturday pointed out that the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, has appointed Arun Goel, a former IAS officer of the Punjab cadre, as the Election Commissioner.

Notably, the Election Commission of India is made up of 3 commissioners. Goyal will work with Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar and Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey in the Election Commission of India. His tenure will expire in December 2027. Besides, Goyal will become the Chief Election Commissioner when the tenure of Rajiv Kumar, who is currently the Chief Election Commissioner of India, ends on February 2025.

On Friday, Arun Goyal took voluntary retirement from the post of Heavy Industries Secretary.

According to the rules, a person can serve as Election Commissioner or Chief Election Commissioner for 6 years or till the age of 65 years.

In May this year, Sushil Chandra retired as the Chief Electoral Officer of India.
