‘Toxic eye drop’ case: Late night raids at Global Pharma Healthcare Pvt. Ltd Company
Chennai: The Indian government authorities raided the drug company late night on Friday after the government authorities there said that the ‘eye drops’ produced by the company in Chennai, India, were contaminated and due to this, one person died and another person lost his sight in the United States.
Last night, Tamil Nadu Drug Controller and members of the Central Drug Control Authority raided the company named ‘Global Pharma Healthcare Pvt. Ltd.’, which is located about 40 km south of Chennai.
Tamil Nadu Drug Controller Dr. P. V. Vijayalakshmi said, “We have collected samples from the batch sent to America and also collected samples of the raw materials used in the preparation of this medicine.” We are awaiting collection of samples of unused drugs that are currently being recalled from the US.
After the investigation was completed at 2:00 am, the government authorities ordered to stop the production of the eye drops. Confirming that the factory has a valid license to manufacture and export drugs, Dr. Vijayalakshmi said, “Next action will be taken after receiving the test report of the samples of the unused drugs returned from America.” They (Americans) only tested samples of eye drops that were opened and used in hospitals.
These eye drops contaminate resistant microorganisms. The company voluntarily withdrew the drug named ‘EzriCare Artificial Tears Eye Drop’ from the US market after the US Food and Drug Administration said that one person lost vision and another person died due to a bloodstream infection. American authorities also said that 55 more people have been affected by this drug.
