New Delhi: Star woman wrestler Vinesh Phogat has brought glory to the country by winning a medal in the World Wrestling Championship. She is the first Indian woman to win 2 medals in World Wrestling Championship. She made history once again by winning the bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championship held in Belgrade, Serbia.
Vinesh lost to Mongolia’s Khulan Batkhuyag in her first match. She later won the bronze medal. She first defeated 2018 Asian Games silver medalist Zuldiz Eshimov of Kazakhstan by 4-0. In the next match, she defeated Leyla Gurbanova of Azerbaijan. She then won the bronze medal match.
Earlier, Vinesh won a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships in 2019. Babita Kumari, Geeta Phogat, Pooja Chanda, Sadhu Mallik, Alka Tomar and Sarita More are the other Indian women wrestlers to win a medal in the history of the event. Bajrang Punia is the only Indian wrestler to have won three medals at the World Championships. Bajrang won bronze medals in 2013 and 2019, while he won silver in 2018.
Last month, Vinesh won her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Vinesh created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win three consecutive gold medals. She was earlier the first Indian woman to win gold in both the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games. In 2014, she won gold in Glasgow (48 kg category) and then in Gold Coast (50 kg) in 2018.
