Johnson Company’s baby powder failed quality inspection, license cancelled in Maharashtra

Johnson's powder was found to be of poor quality during routine quality checks by the state's Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government on Friday took a major step, revoking the license of Johnson & Johnson Company to manufacture baby powder in the state. Johnson’s powder was found to be of poor quality during routine quality checks by the state’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The Maharashtra FDA later said in a press release that it has cancelled Johnson & Johnson’s license to manufacture baby powder in the state. Along with this, the company has been asked to withdraw the substandard powders in the market.

After samples in Nashik and Pune failed quality checks, the FDA issued a show-cause notice to the company, asking why its license should not be cancelled.

However, the company did not accept the FDA’s test report and filed a petition in court requesting that the sample be sent to the Central Drugs Laboratory in Kolkata. But Director CDL, Kolkata also confirmed the report of Maharashtra FDA saying that the said powder is not suitable for the skin of babies.
