New Delhi: The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has announced the Nobel Prize for Chemistry on Wednesday. This year, 3 people will receive this prestigious award. They are Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal and K. Barry Sharpless.

Carolyn R. Bertozzi, Morten Meldal are receiving this prestigious award for the first time. But Sharpless is going to get it for the 2nd time. Earlier in 2001, he received this award. The award was given to him for his research on chirally catalyzed oxidation reactions.

The Nobel Prize Committee said that 3 scientists announced for this year have been announced as winners for this award for the development of click chemistry and bioorthogonal chemistry.

Almost 2 decades later, it was Professor Sarpless who spoke about click chemistry for the first time. It is a type of simple chemical reaction in which the reaction occurs rapidly and there are no side reactions. Professor Sarpless is the head of the chemistry department at Scripps Research, La Jolla, CA, USA.

The Nobel Prize in Chemistry is awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in accordance with the will of the scientist Alfred Nobel. So far, the committee has awarded the Nobel Prize to 113 scientists, seven of whom are women.
