The country’s first water metro, launched in Kerala, will connect 10 islands

Thiruvananthapuram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country’s first water metro in Kochi, Kerala. This is the first water metro in the country. The Kerala Water Metro project built in Kochi city at a cost of Rs 1136.83 crore has connected 10 islands of Kochi and its surrounding areas.

The Prime Minister on a two-day visit to Kerala on Tuesday first inaugurated the Vande Bharat Express Train at Thiruvananthapuram, the first stop in Kerala, then proceeded to Kochi to inaugurate the water metro. Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor joined him in the event.

Kerala Water Metro has 78 electric boats and 38 terminals. The Kerala government and Germany’s KFW have jointly funded the project. Water Metro will run between High Court-Vypin and Vyttila-Kakkanad terminals. Metro travel in air-conditioned boats will be comfortable and affordable. Along with this, people who are stuck in traffic can easily reach their destination.

The project is expected to boost the economy of the Kochi region, including tourism. It will have travel facilities like conventional metro. People will have a good travel experience.
