The failure to fight floods led to 30 officers being hanged as punishment

Pyongyang: In July this year, North Korean leader Kim Jong-un hanged 30 high-ranking officials for failing to control floods. South Korean media reported that more than 4,000 people have died in this flood, especially in Chagang province. According to a report by TV Chosun, a South Korean news station, the hanging was carried out towards the end of last month. There were allegations of corruption and dereliction of duty against officials.

An investigation is also underway against Kang Bong-hoon, the former Party Secretary of Chagang Province. According to an order issued by Kim Jong Un through the North Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), those who neglect disaster prevention responsibilities will face severe punishment. Kim personally visited the flood-affected districts and promised relief. According to KCNA reports, Kim ordered strict punishments against officials responsible for the devastating floods.

According to another report, North Korea is said to be trying to boost its economy by opening its borders to foreigners for the first time since the pandemic. At first, only the outlying city of Samjiyon will be open to tourists, but it is rumored that the capital, Pyongyang, may soon follow suit. In addition, Kim wants to attract outside investors to complete the long-stalled Ryugyong Hotel project. Called ‘Hotel of Doom’, this 1080 feet high and 105 storey building remains incomplete even after 37 years of construction.
