MP’s salary and allowances: The 2024 Lok Sabha elections have ended recently. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has won 293 seats to form the government, while the opposition Indiment has won 232 seats. At this time, public interest has arisen to know about MP’s salary and allowances.

Salary of MP:

An MP gets a basic salary of Rs.1,00,000 per month. Their salaries were increased in 2018 to take account of the rate of inflation and the rising cost of living.

Allowances and Privileges of MPs:

MPs get various allowances and benefits. They get Rs 70,000 per month as constituency allowance. This is to cover expenses related to maintaining offices and electorates within their constituencies. An MP gets Rs 60,000 per month for office expenses, which include stationery, telecom staff salaries, etc.

MP’s salary and allowances : Travel Allowance:

MPs are entitled to 34 free domestic flights every year for themselves and their families. They also get free first class train travel for official and personal purposes. MPs can also claim mileage allowance when traveling by road within their constituencies.

Residence facilities:

MPs are provided rent-free accommodation in key areas during their 5-year tenure. According to their seniority they can get bungalow, flat or hostel room. Those who will not use government accommodation can claim accommodation allowance of  Rs 2,00,000 per month.

Daily Allowance:

During sessions and committee meetings, MPs are entitled to a daily allowance of Rs 2,000 for accommodation, meals and other expenses while in the capital.

MP’s salary and allowances : Medical facilities:

MPs and their families are entitled to free medical services under the Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS). The scheme covers treatment in government hospitals and selected private hospitals.

Phone and Internet:

1,50,000 free telephone calls per year to MPs. Free high speed internet connection is also available in their residences and offices. MPs are provided with free electricity up to 50 thousand units and free water up to 4 thousand kiloliters annually.

MP’s salary and allowances : Pension:

Ex-MPs get a pension of Rs 25,000 per month after completing one term in Parliament.
