London: Will be killed or commit suicide if extradited to India; Nirav Modi, the fugitive Indian diamond merchant currently in London jail, told psychiatrists that he will die in prison anyway.

It may be recalled that the government is trying to bring 51-year-old Nirav, who is involved in the corruption case of Rs.13,000 crores from Punjab National Bank, to India.

Nirav Modi is currently fighting a case in the London High Court challenging the lower court order that he should be extradited to India.

Professor Andrew Forrester, a psychiatrist who supervised him at Wandsworth Prison, told the High Court that he knew that prisoners had hanged themselves from door handles and water taps at the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai, where Nirav Modi is being held in India.

The court said, “When the issue of extradition is raised, Nirav is only thinking of beheading and hanging.” His desperate mental illness has progressed to such an extent that he has been hospitalized twice and placed on ‘suicide watch’ in prison four times.

Criticizing the Indian government’s promises regarding Nirav Modi’s jail stay, Forrester said that there is no provision of personal facilities in the jail. Furthermore, there is no policy to prevent suicide attempts in Indian prisons.

However, counsel appointed on behalf of India, Helen Malcolm K.C. The court was told that Nirav could summon a private psychiatrist there arbitrarily. There will also be another prisoner in his cell. Lawyers can meet him daily. He can also visit his family once a week in prison.

However, Nirav’s psychiatrists are not satisfied with his above promise.
