Hundreds of girls poisoned in Iran over lack of female education: report

Tehran: Iran’s deputy health minister said on Sunday that some people are poisoning schoolgirls in the holy city of Qom to disrupt female education, state media reported.

A large number of schoolgirls were reported to have been exposed to respiratory poisoning since late November, mainly in Qom, south of Tehran. Some of them were taken to hospital and treated.

Deputy Health Minister Younes Panahi confirmed on Sunday that the girls were deliberately poisoned.

Citing Panahi’s statement, state-run news agency IRNA reported that after several students were found to be poisoned in Qom schools, some people wanted all schools, especially girls’ schools, to be closed.

He has not given details in this regard. However, so far no one has been arrested in connection with the poisoning.

IRNA reported that the parents of the sick students gathered outside the governorate of the city on February 14 and demanded compensation from the government authorities.

The next day, the government’s spokesperson Ali Bahadori Jahromi said that intelligence and the Ministry of Education are trying to find out the cause of the poisoning.

Prosecutor General Mohammad Jafar Montazeri last week ordered a judicial investigation into the incident.
