New Delhi: India won the first Twenty20 match against South Africa by 8 wickets in Thiruvananthapuram last Wednesday. On this occasion, Rohit Sharma set the record of winning the most Twenty20 International matches in a single calendar year as an Indian captain. In this year 2022, Rohit, who took the lead in 21 matches, got his 16th victory. As a result, he surpassed former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s record of 15 wins. Dhoni achieved this feat in 2016 and still holds the record to his name. To top it off, Rohit is now considered the most successful Indian captain in winning Twenty20 international matches. Rohit started the current 2022 season with 8 consecutive victories. These included 3 matches against both West Indies and Sri Lanka in February and 2 matches against England in July. Rohit then won 3 out of 4 matches against the West Indies in the Caribbean.
Another achievement was in Rohit’s name. As Indian captain he won every bilateral, tri-national and multi-team series he played. His streak of success came to an end in the last Asia Cup. In the Asia Cup in Dubai, Rohit won two group matches but lost the first two matches to Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Super-4 stage. After losing the first match of the home series against Australia, they won the next two matches to clinch the series.
