Sri Lanka tragedy: No jobs, no money, no food, young people waiting for passports to leave the country

Colombo: The political unrest in Sri Lanka over the past few days has led to a major economic catastrophe in the country. Far from finding jobs, people have to suffer from malnutrition and lack of money. The lack of essentials, from petrol, diesel and cooking gas to medicine, has made people miserable. So the younger generation is preparing to leave the country. This is evident from the crowd of people near the passport office in Colombo.
At present, the total population of Sri Lanka is about 22 million. For the past seven decades, no one has been able to strengthen the economic infrastructure of Sri Lanka. Given the political situation in Sri Lanka over the past 50 years, the Sri Lankan Freedom Party has been in power for almost 24 years.
Meanwhile, senior leaders such as Chandrika Kumar Tunga, Mahindra Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena took over the presidency. However, in the 2019 presidential election, Maithripala defeated Sirisena and became the President of Gotabaya. But no one has been able to strengthen the economic infrastructure. The economy is weakening day by day. Prices for essentials have skyrocketed. The country’s foreign debt has plummeted.
The situation is such that people are not getting jobs. There was a shortage of essentials, including food and money. Eventually the electricity was cut off. The public was outraged by this. Protests erupted in various parts of Sri Lanka. Eventually it escalated. As a result, Gotabaya fled the country and fled to Singapore, according to locals. So when a country’s economy is weak, it is very difficult to fix it.
