Unclaimed Bank Deposits: 42,272 crore bank deposits are unclaimed, the government informed Parliament

Unclaimed Bank Deposits : As of March 2023, the amount of non-demand deposits in banks has increased to Rs.42,270 crore. The central government has given this information in the parliament. As on March 31, 2022, the amount of illegal deposits in banks was Rs.32,934 crore. But in one year it increased by 28% to Rs.42,272 crore.

Rajya Sabha MP Dhananjay Bhimrao Mahadik questioned the finance minister about unclaimed deposits in private and government banks. He also wanted to know what steps the government was taking to identify those who had deposited money in the bank.

Unclaimed Bank Deposits : In response to this question, Finance Minister Bhagwat Karad said, as on March 31, 2021, there were deposits of Rs.23,683 crore in state-owned banks and Rs.4,141 crore in private banks. As on March 31, 2022, it had increased to Rs.27,921 crore in state-owned banks and Rs.50,13 crore in private banks. As on March 31, 2023, state-owned banks had increased to Rs.36,185 crore and private banks to Rs.6,087 crore.

Unclaimed Bank Deposits : Bhagwat said that the RBI has advised banks to display the list of such unpaid deposits on their websites. Also identify such customers or their heirs who are no longer in this world so that the money can be returned to the right person.
