Washington: Two United States government officials said on Thursday that the US plans to impose new sanctions on Russia and China on Friday, The Wall Street Journal reported.
They informed that the sanctions also include provisions for punishing Moscow for using Iranian drones in the war in Ukraine.
They said that this sanction will be imposed on 170 Chinese associations. Going to show the reason, they said, “Washington considers that all of the above associations are fishing illegally in the Pacific Ocean region.” In addition, other nations are concerned that China is over fishing in the area and that Beijing is deploying more and more fishing vessels to expand its maritime influence.
Many of the above sanctions fall under the ‘Global Magnitsky Act‘. Under this 2016 law, the US government can sanction foreign government officials around the world for violating human rights. The United States could issue an entry ban against them and ‘freeze’ their assets.
In addition, the US has condemned Iran for exporting military drones to Russia for use against Ukraine. John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, told reporters on Wednesday that the United States is aware of the ongoing supply of Iranian drones to Russia.
