Waiting time for US visa: 2 days for Chinese citizens, over 2 years for Indians
The applicant will have to wait for 767 days at the Kolkata Embassy and 848 days at the Mumbai Embassy
New Delhi: While an Indian has to wait for more than 2 years to apply for a visa from America, Chinese citizens get it in just 2 days. According to the US State Department website, applicants have to wait 833 days or more than 2 years for an interview appointment at the New Delhi embassy for B-1 business visa and B-2 tourist visa. It means that now if an Indian applies for a visa, he will get an appointment for an interview in January 2025.
Similarly, the applicant will have to wait for 767 days at the Kolkata Embassy and 848 days at the Mumbai Embassy.
On the other hands, applicants in China’s Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou have to wait only 2 days for an interview appointment for a US visa. The American Embassy in India has clarified that appointments are open for all types of visas for Indians. But the reasons for this taking longer are: 1) the demand of Indians for US visas is high, 2) the number of visa-savvy staff is less and 3) due to the epidemic, there has been a lot of disruption in this process since March 2020.
Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar said that he has raised the visa issue with US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. Blinken assured him to fix the problem soon.
