New Delhi: India has now become the world’s most populous nation, overtaking China. The population of India has surpassed the population of China. According to United Nations data, India’s population is 142.86 crores while China’s population is 142.57 crores. Although India’s population is not that much higher than China’s, India’s overtaking China’s population is an important issue.

India has topped the UN’s list of most populous nations for the first time since the UN began collecting population data in 1950. In China, on the other hand, the birth rate has declined and will continue to decline further. Plans to increase the birth rate have been announced in several regions of China, but all plans have failed.

According to UN data, 25 percent of the Indian population is in the age group of 0-14 years. 18 percent of the population is between the ages of 10-19. 26 percent of people are between 10-24 years of age. On the other hand, there are 68 percent of people between 15-64 years of age and only 7 percent of the population is above 65 years of age.

According to estimates by various organizations, India’s population will continue to grow for the next three decades. India’s population will decrease when it reaches 165 crores. No recent official data on India’s population has been released. Because no census has been conducted in India since 2011. 2021 census program has been delayed due to corona epidemic. According to an estimate, Kerala and Punjab have more elderly people. On the other hand Uttar Pradesh and Bihar have majority of youth.

With half of the country’s population under the age of 30, India will become one of the world’s leading economies in the coming years. India’s 1.4 billion population will be considered as 1.4 billion opportunities, said Andrea Wojnar, an Indian representative at UNFPA (United Nations Population Fund). India’s 254 (15-24) million youth will be the source of innovation, new ideas and sustainable solutions. India will go further if its women get proper education and skill building opportunities.
